Why to Wax in the Winter
Alright, I get it.
Long pants & sleeves = grizzly bear season for body hair. I’m right there with you! However, once warm weather hits, I’m scrambling to get back into the shaving/waxing routine again.
Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to hair and there is no right or wrong way to do it - shaving, waxing, letting it grow wild, or a combination of all three! I’m here to tell you that if you haven’t tried waxing yet or only tried it once - now is the time to start! Here is why:
Growth Cycles
Each hair follicle on your body has its very own growth cycle. (This is over 5 million follicles and 5 million different growth cycles!) A growth cycle starts when a hair falls (or is pulled) out. The hair then has to form under the skin and grow. Once it grows to where you can feel it, it can be shaved, and once it grows to about a quarter of an inch, it can be waxed.
Your very first waxing session will remove all the hairs that are long enough to be pulled out with the wax. However, there are many more that may be in the process of forming under the skin or just a tad too short. This is due to the different growth cycles and results in smooth skin lasting for a shorter amount of time than expected.
To see long lasting results, it is so important to stay consistent with waxing. It takes about 3 sessions of waxing spaced 4-5 weeks apart to get the hairs all on the same growth cycle. After this, it is pretty smooth sailing -literally!
Waxing to Reduce Hair Growth
Have you ever heard that waxing reduces the amount of hairs that actually grow on your body? It is true! When you wax, the follicles can be damaged to the point where they no longer produce hairs. Pin-point bleeding right after a wax is a signal that this may be happening! Again, consistency in waxing is what produces long-term results with less hair growth. I can personally attest to this!
Why Winter?
Since it takes about 3 sessions for all of your hair to grow on the same cycle, you are looking at about 3 months of having to periodically grow your hair out. When summer hits and those river/lake/beach days are approaching, we are all guilty of doing a last-minute shave to be super smooth. Unfortunately, this completely hinders all the work you put in waxing! In the winter, it is easier to cover up areas with hair which can keep you on track with consistent sessions and growing hair out to the desired waxing length.
Is Waxing for Everyone?
Nah, let’s be real, some people’s lifestyles fit with different hair removal methods and schedules! Also, everyone grows hair differently. Some people are absolutely blessed with thin and delicate body hair. Others of us can be mistaken for Sasquatch. As a fellow Sasquatch myself, I can truly say that waxing has changed my life when it comes to hair removal. If you haven’t tried it before or are curious to learn more/try again, I am so happy to help and answer any questions!
